As a pro-democracy campaigner and leader of the National League for Democracy in Burma.
- In 2006, a movement called the 88 Generation Students Group launched their White Expression Campaign in support of political prisoners that were being detained by the Burmese military junta. A member of this group and a political prisoner herself, Aung San Suu Kyi carries a white handkerchief in her right hand in solidarity with their cause
- She was awarded the Noble Peace Prize in 1991 “for her non-violent struggle for democracy and human rights” in Burma
